Are You Really Living? Or Just Existing?

Are You Really Living? Or Just Existing?

This is a repost from almost two years ago, but it’s a post that changed my life, so yeah…

This one is an internal debate I’ve been having with myself of late, which has come to a head. I’ve been planning it for a while, loosely, but this weekend I packed all my stuff into boxes. It’s go time.

You see I’ve been living in Plymouth, in England, and it’s a lovely little city. It has a Starbucks, a Nandos, you can get drunk and have fun at the weekend and the people are nice. And yet…

I feel like life is slipping away. Time is the most precious thing we have and it can really slip through your fingers.

Is your life disappearing before your eyes?

The weird thing?

As soon as I mentioned this to people, they all agree with me. Everybody feels it, our life is passing us by as we work hard to pay for the apartment, car and clothes we need to go out and work hard.

It’s a hamster wheel.

Worse than that, a lot of people give that nervous, agitated laugh when you ask them that most basic question: “Are you happy?”

Most people aren’t. We’re doing what is expected of us, we’re living life the way it’s meant to be lived. We are serving our time, then we will die.

People are settling down with a woman they will shortly spend all evening in a bar making jokes about and trying to avoid. We go to work all day to pay the car payment, but we only use the car to drive to the office to earn money to pay for the car. It’s a maddening cycle.

Without getting all Fight Club about it, the things we own really do end up owning us. We really are chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need.

You spend huge money to impress others

We do it for other people and because it’s what we’re meant to do. We don’t need this stuff. A sportscar might bring you pleasure, occasionally, but 70% of the time it’s a pure frustration as you drive within the legal limits on a whiff of throttle. You have a sportscar for the status, the position, the strength it bestows.

But it’s a prop, it’s modern day plumage to attract a low class girl who is impressed by the money it represents. It’s self defeating. Even when you win, you lose in the end.

Others are locked into the concept of providing for their old age. That’s great, but I can sit in a chair and crap my pants just as easy in a studio apartment as I can in a mansion.

Yes you need to pay for your kids

Kids? That’s a different story, you need to pay for them and that’s when a lot of men get serious about life. But even then, how many of you are actually living your dream? How many men are actually striving hard to make a nest that the woman will simply take half of later without really considering if they need to do it, if they want to do it?

You don’t have to settle down and have a family, you know? It’s not the law.

Did you dream about locking down a woman, having kids and growing old together? Are you ecstatic to get out of bed every day? Are you with someone that really rocks your world? Is this as as good as things could get? If so, then awesome. If not, you are wasting the little precious time that you have…

Do you have dreams that you know, somewhere deep down, will always go unfulfilled. Do you really want to learn a skill but just ‘don’t have the time’? Are there places you want to visit if you only had the money?

Live in the now

Then maybe it’s time to do something about all of these things. Maybe it’s time to take action, get brave and live a spectacular life.

If you don’t, you’ll look back at the end and realise you spent your days pounding the treadmill, and you simply didn’t get anywhere at all.

My bag is packed, it’s by the door. I’m just sorting my life out and going. Plymouth is good, but I’m giving up the good to go after the great. I will face issues, but regrets won’t be one of them.

My first video blog is going to happen on the beaches of Punta Cana and if I can inspire just one of you to get off your ass and use the time you have on this Earth for something useful, then this whole little adventure will have been worthwhile.

Always take the time to ask yourself if you’re happy, if what you’re doing is right for you and if you should be doing something else. You only get one shot at life and it will be gone faster than you think.

I’d like to throw this one open to the floor, do you have some thoughts on this one? Share them in the comments below!
