When I was coming back from my biggest ever business disaster, which left me broker than most of you will ever have to imagine, I read a lot. In all kinds of cultures, from the Native American Indians to the English Pagans, I kept hearing about a spirit animal.
It sounded a bit hippy, but then I started to get it. Remember spirit animals have been part of human culture for thousands of years, so maybe there really is something to it.
It became a useful part of my psychological make up. It drove me forward.
Maybe it can drive you, too.
Adopt your own spirit animal and make it a good one. Don’t choose a sheep, take a lion, a tiger, a shark, something dramatic, strong and powerful. It doesn’t have to be a lion, but this noble animal’s courage, strength and power are so ingrained in our psyche that it has become the default option.
There are different spirit animals for different causes, though, so you can have more than one. Start simple, though.
Every time you face a challenge, every time you are struggling to muster your strength or courage, think about that animal. How would the lion deal with it? Take inspiration from the lion’s strength and you won’t go far wrong…
I had literally five pounds in my pocket at one point, like nothing. I spent £3 on a porcelain lion, who has become a symbol to me. It’s totem if you want to take the old Red Indian philosophy and those guys were really big on the whole spirit animal philosophy.
Now I can just focus on the lion, bring my heart rate down and really consider my options. A lion doesn’t flap about and panic. A lion doesn’t stress and rock in a corner. A lion faces the problem, head on, and deals with it.
It sounds like one of those hokey self-help things. But if you can change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
So really embrace different ways of looking at an issue, find the way that works for you. You might find you can deal with shit that just looks impossible right now.
If a little ornament, a tattoo or any physical thing you can touch and feel can help you in any way, that’s awesome too.
Do you want a bit of inspiration when it comes to finding your spirit animal?
Then go for this guided meditation session by one of the best hypnotists out there right now, Michael Sealey. It’s pretty epic, give it a try and you might surprise yourself. Yes it’s hypnosis and if you haven’t, you should try it. Hypnosis helped me sleep, it helped me form positive thoughts and it helped me gain traction in life.
If you haven’t tried it, you should give it a go. So yeah, that’s two new agey things in one post. But if you’re prepared to open your mind and try new things, you’ll find yourself going forward.
