The one thing you need in life is your mission. Everything else comes second, or third, or a distant seventh.
If you’re looking for the answers in life. If you’re in a rut, if you’re just not feeling it, then this is your main goal right now.
You won’t find a truly happy man without a mission.
It’s that important.
Get your mission right and everything else will just fall in to place.
A mission isn’t enough, it still takes work
Nothing works quite that well, you cannot just turn a key. You will have to put some work into your life as a whole. But once your mission is locked in then you’ll find most things just take care of themselves.
So what is your mission? It’s your career, your business, whatever you’re doing. You have to make sure you’re doing the right thing and that you’re awesome at it.
You spend most of your waking hours at work. If you run a business then it consumes you. If it doesn’t, it should. So look at your working life, look closely and look objectively. Is it making you happy?
Ask yourself honestly:
- Do you love your job?
- Are you happy with your career choice?
- Are you proud of what you do?
- Do you wish you were doing something else?
- Can feel your life force slipping away every time you walk through the door?
- Do you dream about bursting in there with a sub machine gun and mowing every last one of them down?
Answer those questions honestly and you’ll know if you have your mission in hand.
We’re going to work on getting the balance right later. For now, let’s get the priorities down. If you don’t have an absolute passion for what you do, then maybe it’s time for a change.
We can’t just quit and be happy
It’s sometimes not as simple as just walking out the door, flipping everyone off as you go. We all have bills to pay and you might have a family to support.
‘Follow your passion,’ sounds great on an internet meme. It doesn’t always work in the real world.
You can, though, make a decision to change something. It can be a big change, like a total career switch, or it can be just a change of job or major client.
A side business can inspire you
A side business can also give you something to focus on and get your firing on all cylinders again. In fact they can be an awesome way to motive yourself and give you an outlet for your true passion without any pressure.
It can even be a way to test the water with that ‘great idea’.
That’s essentially what I’m doing right now. There could be more on the site, lots more, but I’m doing client work in the day before hitting my true love at night. Stick with me to see how that all turns out!
If you’re stuck in a job you couldn’t care less about, then a side business is absolutely the best way to reignite that fire. We’ll be going in to those in a lot more depth in the future. They can be a life saver and this very website has given me my spark back.
Before we go in to massive depth, there is some food for thought on this list. Some of it is wishful thinking, but why not aim high?
You are responsible for you
Wherever you’re at, you’re not stuck in that rut. You’re choosing to lie in it.
You can do something about it. And you have to.
Because if you are not on your mission then it will eat away at your will to live and it will affect each and every part of your life.
My mission went south, life followed
I can trace my whole existential life crisis back to media falling apart. My awesome freelance career became more and more part-time. Then it started to resemble a paid hobby that barely kept my head above water. Then it got worse…
It all went sideways from there.
I tried something new, which didn’t work, and then I spent some time wallowing. That’s the worst thing anybody can do. It robs you of your motivation, your drive and your sex appeal.
Your mission is what gets you out of bed in the morning, it’s what occupies your mind, it’s what gets you going and it’s what gives you drive.
Don’t be a bum
A man with no drive is a bum. Even a gainfully employed bum is still a bum. If you’re a physical 10, you’ll drop right down to a 5 or less if you’re collecting unemployment, struggling to make rent or you’re flipping burgers and don’t give a damn about it.
Forget about the girls, that takes its toll on you. You’ll literally feel guilty for letting yourself down.
Always have a greater goal in mind, always have a passion burning inside of you and always work towards something new.
Because a man on a mission is sexy as hell to women and it will make you feel good about yourself too.
